Opening Scripture:
Romans 3:26 (NLT)
"For he himself is fair and just, and he makes sinners right in his sight when they believe in Jesus."
Romans 3:26 (NLT)
"For he himself is fair and just, and he makes sinners right in his sight when they believe in Jesus."
Study:
In Romans 3:26, Paul reveals the dual nature of God’s righteousness. God is both just and merciful. His justice demands that sin be punished, but His mercy allows Him to forgive us, not because we deserve it but because of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. God’s righteousness is demonstrated in His fairness—He does not overlook sin but has provided a way for it to be dealt with through Christ.
This verse reassures us that God’s decision to justify sinners is not arbitrary or unjust. Rather, it is rooted in His righteous nature. By believing in Jesus Christ, we are declared righteous, not by anything we have done but through the finished work of Christ. This balance of justice and mercy shows the completeness of God’s plan of salvation.
Reflection Questions:
- How does understanding God’s justice and mercy together shape your view of salvation?
- What does it mean for you that God’s decision to justify you is based on His fairness and righteousness?
Pray that you may come to a deeper appreciation for God's justice and mercy. Ask for the strength to reflect both qualities in your own life as you strive to live in righteousness.
