Living as Children of Light

Paul’s letter to the Ephesians was written during his imprisonment in Rome, around AD 60-62. Despite his confinement, the epistle radiates joy and deep theological insight. This letter was intended for a diverse group of believers—both Jews and Gentiles—who were now united in Christ through the gospel. Paul’s primary purpose in writing to the Ephesians was to encourage them to live in accordance with their new identity in Christ. He reminded them of the unity they shared as the body of Christ and the importance of living lives that reflect God’s holiness.

The city of Ephesus, where this church was located, was a major center for commerce and religion, but it was also home to pagan worship, especially the cult of Artemis. The influence of immorality, idolatry, and spiritual darkness was strong in the culture surrounding these believers. Paul was deeply concerned about how the cultural pressures might lead the Ephesian Christians astray. Therefore, he sought to instruct them on how to live as children of light in a world filled with darkness. His exhortation in Ephesians 5:10-14 reflects his desire for them to be intentional in their walk with the Lord, rejecting the ways of the world and instead pursuing what is pleasing to God. By doing so, they would not only safeguard their own spiritual lives but also shine the light of Christ in a darkened world.

In Ephesians 5:10, Paul instructs the believers to "carefully determine what pleases the Lord." This is a call to discernment and obedience, urging Christians to live thoughtfully and intentionally. Paul emphasizes that following Christ is not a passive activity but one that requires a careful examination of our lives, constantly seeking to align our thoughts and actions with God's will. To do this, believers must turn to Scripture and rely on the guidance of the Holy Spirit, as they strive to live in a way that honors God in every aspect of their daily walk.

Paul continues in verses 11 and 12 by urging the believers to "take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness," but instead to "expose them." Here, he makes it clear that Christians are not only called to avoid sinful practices but also to take a stand against them. In the culture of Ephesus, where immorality and idolatry were prevalent, Paul warns that believers must separate themselves from such deeds. However, this is not just about withdrawing from sinful behaviors—it is about exposing the darkness with the light of Christ. By living holy lives, believers naturally shine light on the world's evil practices, revealing the truth of God’s righteousness. Paul adds that some of these sins are so shameful that even speaking of them is disgraceful. His intent is to stress that Christians should never indulge in or glorify sinful actions; instead, their role is to bring these hidden sins into the open, so they can be healed by the transforming power of God.

In verses 13 and 14, Paul illustrates the power of light to both reveal and transform. When Christ's light shines, it exposes sin, but it also brings the opportunity for repentance and redemption. Paul uses an early Christian hymn or chant to emphasize this: "Awake, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will give you light." This is a call to spiritual awakening, urging those who have been complacent or spiritually dead to wake up and embrace the new life Christ offers. The imagery of light here is both profound and hopeful—light not only reveals sin but also leads the way to healing and transformation. Paul is encouraging the believers to be vigilant, ensuring they do not fall into spiritual slumber, but rather live as beacons of light in a dark world, offering hope and salvation to others.

As Paul draws his exhortation to a close, he leaves the Ephesian believers with a powerful reminder: they are called to live as children of light. In a world filled with spiritual darkness and moral decay, Christians must stand apart—not by withdrawing from the world but by reflecting the holiness of Christ in their daily lives. The light they carry is not their own but the light of Christ, which reveals truth, dispels darkness, and offers hope to those still lost in sin. Paul urges the church to remain diligent in discerning what pleases the Lord and to live in such a way that their very lives expose the darkness around them.

Paul’s message is clear—living in the light of Christ is both a privilege and a responsibility. Every believer is called to live with purpose, not only to avoid sinful practices but also to actively seek to please God. By doing so, they become vessels of God’s grace, shining brightly in a world that desperately needs the transformative power of the gospel. The light they bear has the power not only to expose sin but to bring healing, redemption, and new life to those who respond to it.

We must remember, brothers and sisters, that we live in a fallen world. Daily, we are confronted by temptations, and it becomes all too easy to return to sinful habits or, worse yet, to turn a blind eye to sin. Society often pressures us to compromise our convictions. We hear phrases like, “There’s nothing wrong with it,” or “Everyone else is doing it,” as if these are justifications for disobedience. But the truth of God’s Word remains steadfast: sin is sin, and we are called to expose it, not excuse it.

It can be tempting to rationalize or dismiss sin when it is inconvenient to confront it—perhaps even within our own lives. When we are asked about sinful behavior, how often do we find ourselves softening the truth or offering excuses, saying, “Not that there’s anything wrong with it”? But Paul calls us to something greater. He reminds us that darkness cannot coexist with the light of Christ. We must be bold in our stand for righteousness, not by condemning others but by living lives that unmistakably reflect the holiness of God.

So today, I urge you: examine your heart. Are there areas in your life where you’ve allowed darkness to creep in, where you’ve made excuses for sinful behavior—either in yourself or in others? Have you turned a blind eye to the very things Christ calls us to expose? Remember, as children of light, we have the power to shine Christ’s truth and bring His light into every corner of our lives. The world needs that light—your light—to lead others out of darkness and into the hope and redemption found in Jesus.

Let us walk courageously as children of light, not fearing the world's judgment, but standing firm in the truth that we serve a risen Savior who has called us to shine brightly in a world overshadowed by sin. Awaken, O sleeper, and rise from the dead, for Christ will give you light!

From the Heart of Brother Jesse – Friday, September 27, 2024 - Seeking Wisdom from Above

Beloved in Christ,

As we close this week, I want to remind you of one of the most profound promises in the Word of God: If we lack wisdom, we need only ask, and God will give it generously (James 1:5). The wisdom we seek, the wisdom that changes our lives and the lives of others, comes from above. It is pure, peaceable, gentle, and full of mercy. It is a wisdom that transforms us from within and shapes how we interact with the world.

Today, as you face the challenges and decisions of life, take a moment to seek God’s wisdom. Trust that He will lead you, guide you, and give you the understanding you need to navigate whatever comes your way. Whether you are making decisions for your family, your work, or your personal life, know that God is faithful to provide the wisdom you seek when you come to Him in humility.

I pray that you end this week with a renewed sense of purpose, knowing that God’s wisdom is available to you, guiding every step you take.

In His wisdom and love,

From the Heart of Brother Jesse – Thursday, September 26, 2024 - The Peace of Godly Wisdom

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I pray this letter finds you well as we continue to meditate on Sunday’s message. One of the hallmarks of godly wisdom, as we learned, is its peaceable nature. James 3:17 tells us that wisdom from above is first pure, then peace-loving, considerate, and full of mercy. How beautiful it is to know that when we seek wisdom from God, it will bring peace to our hearts and extend peace to those around us.

In a world filled with conflict and division, we are called to be peacemakers—those who bring the peace of Christ into every situation. Wisdom doesn’t stir up strife but calms it. It doesn’t seek to be right at all costs but seeks reconciliation and harmony.

Today, I encourage you to pursue peace in your relationships, knowing that in doing so, you reflect the wisdom of our Heavenly Father. Let your words be seasoned with grace, and your actions be led by love.

May the peace of God fill your heart and overflow into the lives of others today.

Grace and peace,

Mid-Week Message - No Separation

"For I am convinced [and continue to be convinced—beyond any doubt] that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present and threatening, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the [unlimited] love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."  Romans 8:38-39 (AMP)

We married quickly.  Our first date was on April 27th.  He proposed on May 27th.  We married on August 24th.  Yes.  All in the same year.  If you ask us why, I will tell you that I knew he was the one on that first date.  If you ask him, he will say it was because I had a house and his apartment lease was almost up for renewal.  Humor aside, when it comes down to it, we just didn't see any reason to wait.  We loved each other and that was all that mattered.  We got a lot of questions and a lot of warnings that it would never last.  However, we celebrated our 33rd anniversary in August and we still love each other.

Our first year was spent getting to know one another.  Some days were trying, some still are.  When he proposed to me, after I got over my utter shock and initial elation, we talked about the future and came to the agreement that we would enter into our union with the understanding that divorce was not an option.  Whatever life threw at us, good or bad, we would face it together and we would work through any problems.  We are still together so apparently that agreement stuck.  It hasn't always been the easy way, but for us it is the right way.  In 2012 I broke my leg and ended up spending over four months in a hospital bed in our living room.  He had to do everything for me.  And I do mean everything.  In 2018 he went through his life-threatening illness.  I didn't have to do all the same physical things for him but he needed me to be emotionally and spiritually available and I did my absolute best to do that for him.

Both instances reminded us of the relationship we have with Christ Jesus.  As we promised not to leave each other, so He also promised not to leave us, only His promise is for eternity.  We have been together 33 years.  Our Lord knew us before we were born.  He was there when we were conceived.  He saw each of our cells dividing and the first beat of our tiny hearts.  He watched as we developed each limb and hair.  He was there when we took our first breaths and through all of the bumps and scrapes of childhood.  He has walked with us through every moment of our lives, good or bad, and has promised to never leave us.  We have no fear of being separated from Him even through death, unlike an earthly relationship.

This life, and everything in it, is temporary.  Everything except for the bond we have with our Savior.  That will continue forever.  Are you feeling alone or abandoned?  If you are a believer then you can turn to Him and He will hold you tight and reassure you that you are His and that you will never be alone.  If you do not know Him personally but would like to have that same oneness please feel free to ask me how to have that same relationship.  There is no need to wait and all of Heaven will rejoice over you with singing and celebration when you make that choice.  Have a blessed week and know that you are loved completely by the Creator, Almighty God.

James 3:13 teaches that wisdom is not just a concept but something that is demonstrated by a life of good works. Today, I encourage you to let your actions speak louder than words, showing the world the power of God’s wisdom working through you.

When faced with decisions, whether big or small, let your response be rooted in the wisdom that comes from above. Is your heart inclined toward peace and gentleness? Are your actions reflecting the character of Christ? Remember, wisdom is seen in the way we live each day—in the way we treat our families, coworkers, and even strangers.

Take some time to pray today, asking God to fill you with His wisdom and guide your steps so that your life becomes a living testimony of His grace.

I want to encourage you to see every moment today as an opportunity to demonstrate this wisdom through your actions.

Often, we are tempted to seek recognition or validation from the world, but true wisdom shines in the quiet acts of service, the decisions made with integrity, and the love shown to others without expecting anything in return. As we go about our lives, let us carry with us the humility that allows God’s wisdom to work through us.

Let’s continue to pray for one another, asking God to give us the grace to live honorably and to reflect His wisdom in all that we do. May our actions today point others to the One who is the source of all true wisdom.

True Wisdom: Living with Humility and Good Works

True wisdom, as described in Scripture, is more than the accumulation of knowledge or intellectual insight. It is reflected in how we live our lives before God and others. James challenges believers to consider the practical outworking of wisdom in their daily conduct. In his epistle, he directs the church to focus not merely on understanding God's ways but on proving that understanding through an honorable life. Wisdom is not measured by eloquent words or lofty ideas; rather, it is displayed in actions—good works done in humility. This call to live honorably is an invitation to reflect the character of God in all we do. As we consider this text, we must ask ourselves: What does it mean to be truly wise in the eyes of God? How can we demonstrate that wisdom through our behavior and interactions with others? This question sets the tone for our exploration of true wisdom as laid out in James 3:13.

True wisdom is rooted in understanding God's ways, not merely in acquiring knowledge. To be truly wise, we must go beyond intellectual comprehension and align our hearts and lives with the will of God. The book of Proverbs reminds us that "Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom" (Proverbs 9:10, NLT), emphasizing that reverence for God is the starting point of all true understanding. This wisdom manifests itself in a life marked by humility, as those who are wise recognize their dependence on God and place others before themselves. The apostle Paul echoes this sentiment in Philippians 2:3 (NLT), where he exhorts believers to "be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves."

Humility, therefore, becomes a defining trait of those who walk in godly wisdom. Instead of seeking to exalt themselves or gain recognition, the truly wise person seeks to serve and uplift others, following the example of Christ Himself. In a world where pride and self-promotion are often celebrated, the humility that comes from wisdom stands in stark contrast. This humble posture allows us to receive wisdom from God, recognizing that it is not through our own strength or insight that we live righteously, but through His guidance and grace. Wisdom is demonstrated not in words alone but in the humility and grace with which we conduct ourselves toward others.

An honorable life is one that reflects the very character of God. It is not merely about outward actions, but about embodying the virtues that stem from a heart transformed by His wisdom. To live honorably is to let God’s nature flow through our thoughts, words, and deeds. The fruit of the Spirit, as described in Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT), provides a blueprint for such a life: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These traits are the evidence of a life rooted in the wisdom that comes from above.

James makes it clear that good works are not optional but are the natural proof of a wise and honorable life. Just as faith without works is dead, so too is wisdom without action. Jesus Himself affirmed this in Matthew 5:16 (NLT) when He said, "Let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father." Our lives, therefore, should be living testimonies of God’s wisdom, as we engage in good works with humility and integrity. The challenge for us is to continually examine our actions: Do they reflect God’s wisdom? Are we living in a way that honors Him and points others to His truth? As we commit ourselves to doing good, we align ourselves with God’s purpose, demonstrating wisdom in both word and deed.

True wisdom cannot be separated from humility. James contrasts the characteristics of earthly wisdom with those of heavenly wisdom, showing that while earthly wisdom often leads to pride, envy, and selfish ambition, the wisdom that comes from God is pure, peace-loving, gentle, and full of mercy (James 3:17-18, NLT). Earthly wisdom seeks to elevate the self, focusing on personal gain and recognition. It fosters division and strife because it is rooted in the desires of the flesh. In contrast, heavenly wisdom is marked by selflessness, peace, and a desire to serve others.

Humility is not weakness; it is strength under control, guided by a deep reverence for God. The truly wise recognize that wisdom is not about proving oneself right but about pursuing what is righteous before God and man. Humility opens the door for us to grow in wisdom, allowing us to receive correction, learn from others, and rely on God’s guidance rather than our own understanding. Pride, on the other hand, closes that door, blinding us to the truth and leading us away from the path of righteousness. As we grow in wisdom, we are reminded that the foundation of this wisdom is a humble heart that submits to God and seeks to honor Him above all else. True wisdom and humility are inseparable, and together they form the bedrock of a life that reflects God's ways.

In closing, James 3:13 calls each of us to prove the wisdom we claim to have through the way we live. It is not enough to merely speak of wisdom or possess knowledge; true wisdom is demonstrated in an honorable life, characterized by good works done with humility. Our lives should reflect the principles of godliness, serving as a testimony to those around us that we walk in the wisdom that comes from above. The wisdom we seek is not self-serving but others-serving, marked by gentleness, peace, and the humility that mirrors the life of Christ.

As we reflect on this message, we must ask ourselves: how do our actions reveal the wisdom we have in Christ? Are we living in a way that honors God and serves others? The challenge before us is clear—our wisdom must be visible not through lofty words but through the humility and good deeds that flow from a heart transformed by God’s grace. Let us commit ourselves to seeking His wisdom daily, that our lives may be a beacon of His truth, and let our actions speak of the One who guides us.

This week, seek opportunities to demonstrate godly wisdom in your everyday life. Whether through acts of kindness, words of encouragement, or moments of humility, let your actions reflect the wisdom and understanding of God’s ways. As you walk in humility and righteousness, may your life be a testimony to the transforming power of His wisdom.
