Dear Beloved,

Acts 20:35 tells us that “it is more blessed to give than to receive,” and this is a truth that we can hold onto throughout the Advent season. Giving brings joy, not just to those who receive, but to the giver as well. When we give of ourselves—our time, our resources, and our love—we reflect the heart of God, who gave the ultimate gift in His Son, Jesus Christ.

Bible Study for Friday, December 20, 2024 – Rejoicing in the Lord

Opening Scripture:
Philippians 4:4 – “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”

Study:
In the midst of everything happening around us, we are called to rejoice in the Lord. This command is not based on our circumstances but on the unshakable truth that God is good and worthy of our praise. The Advent season is a time to rejoice as we remember the gift of salvation and the joy that comes from knowing Jesus Christ. This joy is unchanging because it is rooted in the eternal love of God.

As we prepare for Christmas, let us make rejoicing in the Lord a daily practice. It is not always easy, but when we focus on the joy of salvation, we find a reason to rejoice even in difficult times. This joy can be a powerful witness to the world around us.

Reflection Questions:

• How do you cultivate a heart of joy in the Lord during Advent?
• How can you rejoice in the Lord even when circumstances are challenging?

Lord of Light,

Thank You for Your unfailing love and the joy of knowing You. As we continue to celebrate this Advent season, we pray for Your guidance today. Help us to live in such a way that our actions reflect the peace and joy that come from knowing Christ. Let the light of Christ shine in us, and through us, into the lives of those we meet. May we seek to be instruments of Your peace, bringing Your joy to a world that needs it.

Evening Prayer for Thursday, December 19, 2024: El Elyon, Most High God

El Elyon,

You are the Most High God, and we praise You tonight for Your greatness and sovereignty. As we look to the joy of Christ’s birth, we are reminded that You are above all things, and that in You, we find our peace and refuge.

Tonight, we rest in the knowledge that You are in control of all things, and we surrender our worries to You. May Your peace reign in our hearts, filling us with a joy that transcends all circumstances. Help us to focus on the true joy of this season, the joy that is found in Christ alone.

We praise You, Most High God, for Your peace and Your presence in our lives.

Dear Beloved,

As we near the celebration of Christ's birth, let us take a moment to reflect on the peace that He brings into our lives. In John 14:27, Jesus promises us peace—His peace, not as the world gives, but a peace that surpasses understanding. This peace is deeply intertwined with the joy of salvation.

When Christ is in our hearts, He fills us with His peace and joy. The world may try to offer us peace through fleeting comforts or circumstances, but these will always fall short. The peace that Christ offers is one that remains steadfast, no matter the storms we may face. It is a peace that fills us with joy, knowing that He is the source of our salvation and that He is with us through every trial and triumph.

As you reflect on His coming this Advent, let His peace settle in your heart, and may it produce a deep, abiding joy that radiates to those around you. Let us share that peace and joy, especially with those who need it most.

Almighty God,

Thank You for waking us to a new day. We pray that as we go through this day, we would carry the joy of salvation with us. Help us to keep our eyes focused on You, remembering that our true joy comes from knowing You as our Savior. May our hearts be aligned with Your will today as we serve others and spread Your love.

Evening Prayer for Wednesday, December 18, 2024: Jehovah-Jireh, Our Provider

Jehovah-Jireh,

Thank You for being our provider. As we end this day, we acknowledge Your faithfulness in meeting our needs. You have supplied us with everything we need to face the challenges of this world. We trust that You will continue to provide for us, both spiritually and physically.

We ask for Your peace to settle over us as we rest. Calm our minds and hearts, and remind us that You are always with us, providing and protecting. May we find comfort in knowing that You are our Jehovah-Jireh, and that Your provision is abundant.

Mid-Week Message - The Gift of Jesus

 "And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them."  Luke 2:6-7 (NLT)

Christmas is only a week away.  It seems to have come so quickly this year!  I'm sure there are millions of children that would argue with me over that.  I remember being a child and waiting for this most fabulous day.  It did seem to take forever then.  Being an adult changes so much.  But I like to think back on those days and remember not only my own young anticipation but that of my daughter as well.  Can you remember?  One of the things that took place in school was writing a paper on "What I Want for Christmas."  I guess teachers knew it was all we were thinking about anyway so we might as well use those thoughts for a little creative writing assignment.  If you are a fan of the movie "A Christmas Story" then you may associate this with Ralphie's Christmas theme.

Since I am now the one that does the buying and wrapping of the presents, the anticipation is a little different but still very real.  It is such a joy to watch my daughter unwrap her gifts.  I always get her some things that she needs but try hard to make sure there are some items that are just for pure enjoyment.  So now our tree stands with presents beneath, waiting for Christmas morning when the paper will be removed and the gifts will be revealed.  How I hope they bring the joy that I intended when I chose them.  

As for me and what I want for Christmas, well, mostly I want my family to be happy.  I want for their lives to be fulfilling and for them to be content enough to not have any regrets but not so content that they stop reaching for whatever God still has for their futures.  For my husband and my child I wish for a deep and abiding love of their Lord and Savior and for them to always walk in His footsteps.  And for myself, I long to feel His presence and am just grateful that He never lets go of my hand.

When I read the scriptures that give account of the birth of Jesus I find myself in total awe and I close my eyes and place myself there beside the manger.  Mary was able to cradle the great I AM in her arms.  Oh, what that must have been like.  This first gift of Christmas, this tiny newborn infant, was looked upon by animals and shepherds.  He didn't arrive wrapped in bright paper with ribbons and bows to be placed beneath a sparkling Christmas tree.  Instead, He was heralded by angels and drew wise men to His side by a star unlike any other.  This tiny King had no palace but rather a stable where He was laid in hay.  His wore no fine robe.  Why, He didn't even have a nice soft baby blanket.  He was swaddled in strips of cloth. Yet, I can think of no more noble birth ever.  

Next week, as we gather with our families to open presents, can we just stop briefly to remember that first gift?  It is because of Him that we have this meaningful time.  Had he not left His place beside His father and taken on human form on earth, there would be nothing to celebrate.  Because He did we have the assurance of redemption and eternal life beside Him.  If I were to write an essay on what I want for Christmas, it would simply say, "More of Jesus" because there is nothing on this earth that could ever outweigh my desire for Him.  

I pray that each of you has a very Merry Christmas and that you are enveloped by His love.  No matter what you may be going through, His grace IS sufficient and He will walk every road you face beside you.  Never let go of His hand and keep your eyes and mind firmly set on the King of Kings, the Lord of All, the tiny baby who came to give His life for you.  God bless. 

Bible Study for Wednesday, December 18, 2024 – The Peace of Christ

Opening Scripture:
John 14:27 – “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

Study:
Christ’s peace is a direct result of His presence in our lives. Unlike the fleeting peace of the world, the peace of Christ is enduring, secure, and rooted in His perfect love. As we anticipate Christ’s birth this Advent season, we are reminded that He came to bring peace—not just peace in our circumstances, but peace in our hearts.

When we experience the peace of Christ, we find rest from worry and fear. This peace is a great source of joy because it allows us to trust God with every part of our lives. As we reflect on this verse, we are called to let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts and to share that peace with others.

Reflection Questions:

• What areas of your life need the peace of Christ today?
• How can you cultivate the peace of Christ in your heart this Advent season?
• How can you be an instrument of peace to others around you?

Prayer Focus:
Pray for the peace of Christ to rule in your heart and to extend to others, especially as you prepare for Christmas.

Lord of all,

We thank You for this morning and the breath of life You have given us. As we enter this day, we reflect on the joy that is found in the salvation You have provided through Your Son, Jesus Christ. May that joy fill us and spill over into every interaction we have. Help us to be a living example of Your love and peace, especially during this Advent season. May our hearts be filled with worship and adoration as we await the celebration of Your Son’s birth.

Evening Prayer for Tuesday, December 17, 2024: Jehovah-Nissi, Our Banner of Victory

Jehovah-Nissi,

You are our banner of victory, and we praise You tonight for the victory we have in Jesus Christ. As we look to the joy that is found in knowing Him, we are reminded that Your love and Your presence are our source of strength.

Grant us peace, Lord, in our hearts, knowing that the battle has already been won. We rest in the assurance that Your victory over sin and death is complete, and that in You, we find our ultimate peace and joy.
Help us to live with courage, proclaiming Your truth to all around us.

I pray that this season of Advent is bringing you closer to the true joy that is found in Christ alone. As we await the birth of our Savior, it is easy to get swept up in the material aspects of Christmas—the gifts, the decorations, the festivities. Yet, true joy, the kind that endures, comes not from what we receive, but from what has already been given to us.

John 15:11 tells us that Christ’s joy will be in us and that this joy will be complete. This is not a fleeting happiness based on external circumstances, but a deep, abiding joy that comes from knowing Jesus as our Savior. The anticipation of Christ's birth is not just a sentimental feeling; it is a cause for profound rejoicing, because in Him, we find ultimate peace, grace, and joy.

Let this be a reminder to you, dear friend: no matter what is happening around you, the joy of salvation cannot be taken away. Christ’s joy is your joy, and it is more than enough.

Bible Study for Tuesday, December 17, 2024 – True Joy in Christ

Opening Scripture:
John 15:11 – “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.”

Study:
In this passage, Jesus is speaking to His disciples, telling them that His joy will be in them, and as a result, their joy will be complete. True joy does not come from external circumstances but is found in a relationship with Jesus Christ. When we are connected to Christ, His joy fills us, and we experience a peace that surpasses all understanding.

During this Advent season, it is easy to get caught up in the material aspects of the holidays, but the true joy of Christmas is found in Christ alone. His joy fills us and leads to a deeper sense of fulfillment than anything this world can offer. As you reflect on this passage, think about how Christ’s joy fills you and how you can share that joy with others.

Heavenly Father,

Evening Prayer for Monday, December 16, 2024: Elohim, Our Creator and Sustainer

Elohim,

We thank You for this day, for the life and breath that You have given us. As we prepare to rest tonight, we recognize that You are our Creator, and in You, all things hold together. We praise You for Your infinite wisdom and power that sustain us in every moment.

May Your hand be upon us, guiding us through this season of Advent, where we anticipate the joy of Christ’s coming. Let our hearts be filled with hope and expectation, knowing that the peace of Jesus will reign in our hearts and in our world.

We lay down our worries before You tonight, trusting You with our every need.
