Sermon Series - 5 Kernels of Corn

It is our tradition to share with you the story of the five kernels of corn. According to the legend, the Pilgrims faced a horrible famine which left them little to eat. William Bradford began to ration their food. Their meager rations were five kernels of corn per day.

Instead of despair, the Pilgrims remained faithful and looked to God for their daily bread. With their souls nourished, they were able to survive the famine. In time, God blessed them with abundance and the Pilgrims never forgot what God had given them.

Before each Thanksgiving meal, five kernels of corn were placed on each plate in remembrance of what they went through and to truly be thankful for God's blessings.

As we approach Thanksgiving, each message leading up to Thanksgiving will be devoted to giving thanks to God and remembering the lesson of each kernel of corn.

  • The first kernel reminds us that God loves us.
  • The second kernel reminds us that God provides for our needs.
  • The third kernel reminds us of our families and friends given to us by God.
  • The fourth kernel reminds us to love and help others in their time of need.
  • The fifth kernel reminds us that God hears and answers our prayers.

Let us never forgot God's blessings and His love for us.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 New Living Translation

Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.
